In the 300’s AD, the city of Rome had over 100 public toilets where people would meet as a social event to share news and exchange thoughts while doing their “business.” The practice at that time was to wipe using a sponge attached to a wooden handle. The sponge was then rinsed in a channel of water that ran in front ofthe toilets. After rinsing, the sponge was reused by the next person. Is it possible this is where we get the saying, “getting hold of thewrong end of the stick”? Who knows, but we’re thankful for toilet paper!
