Public water fountains have existed since the Roman Empire and many of the ones made in Nepal in the 500s AD are still in use today. Originally continuously running water, today’s water fountains are almost exclusively tap-operated, meaning we can turn them on or off. The first public water fountains in the U.S. were funded by thetemperance movement in hopes that people would trust sanitary drinking fountains and not rely solely on alcoholic beverages for theirhydration needs.
