It wasn’t that long ago that we were heating water in a pot on the hearth or on the stove to provide hot water for a bath or washing clothes. That all changed when Benjamin Waddy patented the first gas tank type water heater in 1868. His design was improved uponand made safe for home use by Edwin Ruud in 1889. You mayrecognize those dates as being during the industrial revolution,when so many of our modern conveniences were born. Even tankless water heaters had their beginning during that time as Stiebel-Eltron patented the first one in 1929. From that time on, innovation just kept getting hotter!
