The first level of licensing for a plumber in the state of Georgia is called the Journeyman’s License. The name makes sense in that aspiring plumbers are required to have 3 years work experience with signed paperwork showing they apprenticed under multiple, licensed, master plumbers. This 3 year “journey” is intended to give them experience in all areas of plumbing. The meaning of the word “journeyman” goes back to the 1200s when members of a skilledtrades lodge (guild) would journey to other lodges to learn more skills, technology, and methods to improve their craft. The same could be true today, if we refocus our efforts on the skilled trades.
